    The White House Conference on Library and Information Services included life-long learning as a theme. A resolution on literacy called for the expansion of literacy programs at the community level, identification of effective adult literacy programs, coordination of library programs with other adult education programs, cooperation among public educational agencies and joint planning. April 28 – President Carter attends the White House Correspondents Dinner in the International Ballroom at the Washington Hilton Hotel. April 30 – President Carter announces the appointment of Helen Meyer for membership on the Advisory Committee of the White House Conference on Library and Information Services.

These proceedings of the White House Conference on Library and Information Services contain resolutions which are the basis for the proposed National Library and Information Services Program and for new national legislation.

The resolutions. The seven short papers in this collection were developed to support discussions during the White House Conference on Library and Information Services.

History. The American Indian Library Association was officially established in as a result of the Indian White House Pre-Conference of on Indian Library and Information Services On or Near Reservations.

This Pre-Conference took place in Denver, CO, and its focus was on the amelioration of library services and resources to American Indians.

The Library is used for teas and meetings hosted by the President and First Lady.
